Beauty contests are actually considered as platforms to enter the glamour world of film industry. The focus of the pageant is to select a contestant who is considered as "beauty with brains". The contestants have to show off their dresses and carry themselves gracefully. Some people do not like it, there view is limited to what they see. It is not limited to physical beauty. The winner of the contest has many responsibilities on her shoulder. She has to spend a year in social welfare. The beauty pageants are involved in welfare of women and children of the world. I totally disagree that the Beauty contest degrades the womanhood. We need to change our view regarding these pageants.

I agree with the statement that beauty contests are degrading. They degrade women to mere objects. The sponsors exploit women by requiring them to parade in swimsuits or even lingerie. They are judged mainly on their physical appearance rather than on any other qualities they may possess.

When the women parade themselves on stage, the judges will look at a number of things, but the most important criteria will probably be poise. To achieve proper poise, a woman's body should be well proportioned - having a neck proportionate to her height, lanky legs and so on. This process of evaluating poise can be compared to dog shows where golden retrievers of the wrong bodily proportions are kicked out of the competition. I feel judging women primarily on their looks degrade womanhood.

Moreover, beauty contests project an unrealistically thin image of the ideal woman in the eyes of the public. As it is, we are already bombarded with such silly standards by the mass media. Do we really need a beauty pageant to further aggravate the situation? A John Hopkins study has shown that more than half of the Miss America pageant winners are underweight, with a Body Mass Index of about 18.5, well below the normal BMI of 20 -- 25. Insecure women who watch the pageants are bound to develop a false body image and may even become anorexic or even bulimic just to look like beauty queens.

I feel beauty contests violate some religious or cultural practices. I consider western style beauty contests as immoral, because the female participants are typically not dressed modestly. This really degrades women in the eyes of a conservative society. Lastly, when the winner wears a crown and reigns for a year, she is actually being exploited to do cheap promotions for the sponsors who make use of her to promote their products until they see it fit to replace her with some other beauties. This is cold and mercenary.

For all the reasons given, I find beauty contests degrading to women. Every woman is beautiful in her own right. They do not have to take part in beauty contests to make others appreciate them and tell them that they are beautiful by other people's standards.

First of all I would like to say that it is not what you do that degrades a woman, but how you do it. If the pageant is strictly about looks and beauty than it is what it is. To see who has the better look or the look that is more honourable.

This is not degrading but can cause self esteem issues for women that enter these pageants just to feel pretty or just to prove a point to the world. Pageants are not for every woman but unfortunately a lot of the wrong women enter these pageants and wind up getting their feelings hurt.

I think when women have to wear little or nothing with all types of strange men looking at them, than that can be degrading to a woman if she doesn't know how to handle this mentally. Personally I think it is a beautiful thing to show your body especially when it is nice.

If certain women think pageants are degrading then don't bother with them. Believe me there are other things excluding pageants that degrade women. But it is a matter of opinion and it strictly depends on the woman. So I say no, pageants are not degrading. It's the woman herself that determines what makes her feel less than who and what she is.

This is my favourite topic and thanks for giving this opportunity. Every Woman has a unique talent and Beauty contest is the great platform to prove who she is. ! Every contest is held to bring out the inner talent and beauty is not an easy thing to acquire and to maintain it is also a difficult thing and more over they not only consider the outer looks but also many other factors like Talent, their confidence levels, way of speaking. , everything matters. And all gals can?t become mother Teresa but they can succeed in their careers. Modelling is one of them.

We can?t expect everyone to become mother Teresa. Why gals should always be helping and sacrificing their lives. ? It?s their wish which passionate her. And coming to dress code we can?t expect a dress code which is being conducting internationally. And I think saree is most exposing than modern outfit. It all depends on how you take things so boys don't keep restrictions on gals. Those days are gone.

My opinion about "Beauty contests degrade womanhood". First let us know what exactly does womanhood means? Womanhood' means 'qualities traditionally possessed by a woman'. Here, I'm just discussing about India.

But, before discussing traditional quality of woman in Indian cultures, first talk about beauty contest. Beauty contest is a competition in which young ladies participate. There are various rounds for elimination like swimsuit round, evening gown round, personality test round and finally question answer round. After all these rounds the winner is the one who is the most beautiful but also most intelligent. Not to say, these contests target beauty with the brain or simply' a smart woman'.

In most of the beauty contests in India, there is no swimsuit round, the round which is the most in question and some say is a vulgar round. So, those contests which have just normal personality test round or question answer round can't be even considered as degrading womanhood.
But yes, national level contests have all the rounds mentioned by me. Now, just think about it, almost all women participating in swimsuit are used to with swimming or swimming costume. And, they don't swim in private. They swim in public in front of other males. How swimming in a contest can degrade womanhood but not swimming in public?

Let's talk about culture; many argue that beauty contests are against Indian culture. But, what is Indian culture? Indian culture of the past also included child marriage, sati system, dowry system and prohibition of widow remarriage. Some of it is still in practice.
Apart from this, womanhood aka traditional qualities possessed by women are being an idle wife, who don't argue with husband, produce and care children, don't interfere in monetary matters, and doesn't talk with other men, stays in home and above all possess shyness. But, now a day, boundaries of womanhood is more flexible and expanded. Woman is now becoming equal part of family. They are earning, working and even managing companies and countries. So, we can't argue about degradation of womanhood taking medieval time's definition. We have to take present time's example.
Beauty contest are in no way altering womanhood in modern era. You may take the example of Aishwarya Rai. She had won Miss World contest in 1994. She was also awarded by Miss Photogenic by Miss World organization. After that for one year she toured all around the world for welfare programs organized by the organization. What she gave back to India is no shame from the world. But, name and fame that Indian women are also among the most beautiful. She appeared in Bollywood, married to Abhishek Bachchan. In no way she had degraded image of Indian women. I'm very much sure, no one sitting here had even saw the swimsuit round photo of Aishwarya Rai. I have. It's on my desktop. We never say that Aishwarya Rai had once participated in swimsuit round. We just remember her as the most beautiful woman of the planet.
Miss India in present time is just a talent hunt for becoming models. Those who most care about all the news and updates about Miss India contest are mainly associated with fashion world. We don't even know in which month every year Miss India contest is been organized. So, where is the point of degradation of womanhood? If the public is not even interest how can it degrade their moral values?
No one sitting here can say that Beauty contest upgrade womanhood. So, Beauty contest neither upgrade nor degrade womanhood. Simply saying there is no relation between beauty contests and womanhood.

Beauty contests in no way degrading the womanhood, but on the other side it is enhancing their professional career. It is helping the woman to come out of their houses and take part in the contest to groom their talent. It provides a platform on which they can showcase their talent and tell the whole world that they are not behind anyone.

It allows women to gain name for them and make their family and parents proud. It helps them gain finances and help them economically. It allows women to gain a place in between other highly qualified people and it adds a new dimension to their beauty and life. Beauty contests require the contestants to diet and slim, and fit the stereotypical image of 'beautiful' women. It is against the androgynous society that feminists propose.

Beauty contests do degrade the image of the women in the society. Beauty contest makes them vulnerable to the attacks that can be withering physical or mental in nature. Exposure is good but it should not come with a price.

I think these beauty contests are surely degrading womanhood. These are because of the exposure of western culture over our culture. There are a lot of ways to expose ourselves and i think this is not the right way to explore out talents.

We can stand as a unique person in this world by helping the needy, serving our society, raising our voice over social evils such as discrimination of caste, religion, region. So i think exposing our beauty over outside world is unnecessary.

Persons must be honoured only for their internal beauty..But not for their external appearance.
